Typical materials for a topsoil project

  • Topsoil
  • Compost
  • Landscape rake
  • Wheelbarrow

Volume estimates assume uniform depth. Settling may reduce visible depth after spreading.

Understanding the results

Topsoil volume is based on area and depth. Results show cubic feet and cubic yards with an overage allowance for settling and spillage.

  • Cubic feet = length × width × depth (ft)
  • Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27
  • Cubic yards with waste = cubic yards × (1 + waste%)
  • Recommended order rounds up to the nearest 0.1 yd³

Results are planning estimates based on typical assumptions. Verify quantities with product labels and your project layout before purchase. How we calculate

Frequently asked questions

Measure area length and width in feet and depth in inches. For new lawns, 4–6 inches of topsoil is common. The calculator converts to cubic feet and cubic yards with your waste allowance.
