Typical materials for a tile project

  • Tile
  • Grout
  • Spacers
  • Thinset
  • Sealer

Order tile using your calculated count plus waste. Mortar and grout quantities depend on tile size and joint width.

Understanding the results

Tile count is based on floor area divided by individual tile area. A waste factor accounts for cuts, breakage, and pattern layout.

  • Floor area = room length × room width (sq ft)
  • Tile area = (tile length × tile width) ÷ 144 (sq ft)
  • Tiles needed = floor area ÷ tile area
  • Recommended tiles include waste and round up to a whole number

Results are planning estimates based on typical assumptions. Verify quantities with product labels and your project layout before purchase. How we calculate

Frequently asked questions

Add 10% for straight layouts and 15–20% for diagonal patterns, large-format tile, or complex cuts. The calculator applies your waste percentage and rounds up to whole tiles.
